Let's take a second to talk about Elliott Smith. I can't believe I've had this blog almost an entire year and I've never done a post solely dedicated to him- my emo soulmate. All of my friends know that if Spotify notifies them that I've been listening to too much Elliott Smith, it's time for an intervention. In college, whenever I started whining about something stupid (studying) my boyfriend would pretend to play the guitar and start singing "Needle in The Hay". Yes that was like eight years ago, but what can I say? I'm consistent.
This is for you, Bianca
So yes, Elliott Smith is synonymous with depressing (he stabbed himself in the heart...that's pretty depressing) but as all artistic geniuses are, he was a tortured soul. Also I'm still convinced that the girlfriend did it SO THERE. Everyone views the world a little bit differently, but I am cut from the same cloth where I truly believe that there has to be some dark for us to appreciate the good. I absolutely HATE the expression "everything happens for a reason" because I'm sorry, it doesn't. Sometimes crappy things happen for no reason at all, and all we can do is slog through it and try and come out of it a stronger person. Last fall, around the 10th anniversary of his death (whoa I feel old), I found a really excellent article that explains this a bit more eloquently than I do.
An interesting fact that I learned about Elliott Smith: he had a tattoo of the state of Texas, which he identified as home. I have a tattoo of Idaho. Do with that information what you will. He also had a tattoo of Ferdinand the Bull, which Lena Dunham totally copied and that enrages me because I want absolutely no connection to her ridiculous self and via the transitive property, (me>elliott>her=ew) we are connected.
This should be everyone's life motto
But anyway. Go ahead and listen to one of the lesser depressing of his songs. I think at some point in my life I had Bled White as a ringtone because it features my favorite lyrics of all time:
Don't you dare disturb me/don't complicate my peace of mind/cause you can't help or hurt me/the anger, being mean, was just a waste of time
So have a nice week everyone- and don't be mean. Or intimidating.
