I've always been a fan of the surrealist/expressionistic art forms. Think László Moholy-Nagy and René Magritte. There is something really interesting about the juxtaposition of reality and absurdism that has always fascinated me. Pretty things are great, but I love something that makes me think.
The Treachery of Images
Love Your Neighbor
This morning, I came across WITCHORIA, the website for Brooklyn-based graphic designer Victoria Siemer and have essentially become a fangirl. Her "Human Error" series is an exploration of heartbreak in the digital age- and what do I love more than the internet except feeling ALL OF THE FEELS?
Per an interview with Vice's "The Creator's Project: "(...) she overlays heartbreak-related error messages onto pictures Photoshopped to resemble Polaroids. They're little windows into confromations of the past- as imitated by the grainy pictures- juxtaposed with moments form the present- highlighted by error messages that hit our computers on a daily basis".
Yes. Yes, I do.
Interesting fact about Siemer- she is approximately the same age as me, so I think that really ups the relatable factor. My favorite image from the collection above- "Loading Existential Crisis" feels like waking up every single morning. I wish my crises involved more flowers though...
It's unfortunate that the most beautiful, intriguing things seem to stem from a place of sadness, but I am very grateful that there are artistic souls in the world who can capture these emotions for good. Another thing I find really intriguing about this collection is how she uses an almost self-deprecating humor to describe these emotions. It took me back to a particularly terrible workday, almost four years ago. I think at the time I was experiencing an unfortunate love triangle (spoiler: I lost) and was really overwhelmed and annoyed at my job. And then this happened:
Thanks, CRM. I know.
:) This made my day.
