A few days back, the #blogeverydayinmay topic was about songs that bring back memories. Since my favorite thing in the entire world is music, I decided to go ahead and blog on this topic, even though it's JUNE! (Where did the year go!?)
I have so many instances where songs bring back such vivid, emotional memories to me. To start from the beginning:
1.
Beach Boys- Sloop John B. For my eighth birthday, my dad gave me a discman and a set of Bose speakers. A serious gift for an eight year old, but I have been a music loving child from a very young age, and it definitely came from him. One of the first CDs I got was a Beach Boys greatest hits album. This song will always and forever be the beginning of my musical education.
2.
Camera Obscura- Hey Lloyd, I'm Ready to be Heartbroken. Before I met BF I was kind of in one of those, "I'm never dating again, all guys suck and will leave you for high school girls" phases (what, that's never happened to you?) But then I decided that I should stop being such a wimp, prepare myself to be heartbroken yet again, and go for the gold. I honestly might play this song at our wedding, and people will be like, "what the hell is this song about being heartbroken, and why is it playing at a wedding?" But when BF moved across the country, I kept repeating to myself, "I'm ready to be heartbroken. Bring it on". And I won, so there.
3.
No great memory here aside from the fact that Pinback has been one of my favorite bands since high school, and will remain so forever. This song is so heartbreaking and amazing, and then you find out it's all about a goldfish. You are sly Pinback. And I love you.
4.
Built to Spill will always and forever be my favorite band. They're from Idaho, and for that, they will always be a few points ahead. Since I posted the song "Twin Falls" last week, I'll go with my second favorite song. Distopian Dream Girl reminds me of the summer I turned 15 and got my driver's license (duh, I'm from Idaho, you can drive as a fetus, basically). I loved cruising in my 1991 Subaru Legacy, Raymundo, with my best friend Ingrid by my side, rocking out to Built to Spill.
5.
Beach House- Wishes. I'm walking down the aisle to this song. Deal with it.
Honorable mentions:
Leigh, you know this is for you
And Duh, Robyn, because she is the Killingest Popstar on the Planet
RIP LCD Sounsystem. You were incredible.
