I have been reading a ton lately. Since Atlanta decided to play a sick joke on us all this summer and rain, almost exclusively, every weekend, I've spent a lot of my free time curled up in our new armchair, reading on my ipad. Shoutout to my parents and J's parents for sending iTunes cards for my birthday! So many books! I (embarrassingly) have been catching up on all of the Pretty Little Liars books, because I'm 12 years old, but I've also had some time to fit in some new reading as well.
The Recessionistas begins over labor day weekend 2008, AKA when the stock market crashed and the economy went kaput. Also, coincidentally, the first weekend of my senior year of college. I have great timing. Anyway, this book followed the lives of three women who were all involved/affected by Wall Street during this time. To be completely honest, I have never been totally clear on what exactly happened, just that I was going to have a hell of a time finding a job when I graduated. I love how educational this was for me. Wall Street is almost a character itself, and following these women through the next weeks and months was really informative. It was also very reminiscent of The Nanny Diaries, The Ex Mrs. Hedgefund, and other chick lit type gems. I thought this was definitely worth the read.
I know that everyone and their mom read Girls In White Dresses this summer, and honestly, they should have. I've read it three times. This is basically the perfect book for those of us who are in our mid (to late....ugh) twenties. It follows the stories of several good friends who are all connected, through college, friends, etc. and chronicles their lives in the years after graduating. Living paycheck to paycheck, hanging out in Lincoln Park, getting their hearts broken, marriages, babies, divorces, and at the end- moving away from the city one of them loves the most to be with her boyfriend (something I know nothing about, obviously. Just kidding, I might have cried when I read that part). It's one of those books that really has no plot. It's just a day in the life. And those are the books I love best.
I bought MWF Seeking BFF before I moved to Atlanta because I thought- hey! I'm going to need some new friends, this could give some great advice! And even better, halfway through I realized that the author was someone I worked with on the Oprah Show back in the day, so I really felt connected. The only annoying thing was that she moved TO Chicago, and I was moving AWAY from it. To be honest, I wanted to like this more than I did. Her concept was to go on 50 "friend dates" over the course of a year with new potential friends. It got exhausting after awhile, and the ending was kind of depressing. It basically was just a reminder that things are never going to be like they were when we were in college. Friends come second to husbands. And that's ok, but I don't know if I'm ready to accept that quite yet. The only reason I'd advise reading this book is if you're in the same situation- moving to a new city and looking for some interesting ideas on friend making.
So those are my recent reads. If you have any suggestions, I'm almost done with the PLL series and let's be honest. I could use something a little more mentally stimulating!
